Court Makes Ruling on Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi's Impeachment

The Employment and Labour Relations Court Labour Court on Tuesday extended conservatory orders against Speaker Beatrice Elachi's impeachment.

Justice Stephen Radido made the ruling reinstating Elachi at her current position until 14th September when the case will be heard.

The High Court judge is on Friday expected to rule on whether the impeachment was procedural.

Elachi's ouster from office took shape last week when members of the Nairobi County Assembly voted for her removal citing gross misconduct and abuse of office.

"Her actions and omissions have caused embarrassment and brought the office of the speaker into disrepute, this assembly resolves to sanction," read a motion filed by Waithaka MCA Antony Kiragu.

The speaker temporarily survived the ouster when she challenged the decision of the county legislators at the High Court.

Despite having been temporarily reinstated, the MCAs stormed her office on Monday demanding she leaves the premises.

Kiragu, accompanied by a number of ward reps including Nominated MCA Mary Njambi caused a scene with anti-Elachi chants.

On his part, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko stated that there was nothing he could do on the Speaker's ouster adding that the MCAs acted according to the provisions of the Law.

He also added that the MCAs have the capacity to impeach him as governor concluding: "Probably I am next in line."
