The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2A which has been under construction for the past three years is finally complete.

The line that runs from Nairobi to Naivasha is 120.49km long and it transverses the vast Rift Valley.

The SGR Phase 2A has 29 bridges with six being classified as super-major, 15 major and eight medium-sized ones.

At 46km, Mulua Orkondi in Duka Moja, Narok County, is the tallest of the bridges. Three tunnels are also incorporated with a total length of 7.15km.

There are four intermediate stations: Ongata Rongai, Ngong, Maai Mahiu and Suswa. One passing station is also located at Nachu.

The SGR Phase 2A is set to be launched on October 16, 2019, by President Uhuru Kenyatta

It remains an essential project of Kenya's Vision 2030 strategy and a key enabler of regional economic growth within East and Central Africa.

President Kenyatta has asserted his commitment to laying the necessary foundation for the trans-African rail and road infrastructure that will transform intra-African connectivity and trade for the economic benefit of over a billion Africans.

Naivasha sub-county commissioner Mbogo Mathioya stated that the launch of the modern railway would coincide with that of Internal Container Depot at a dry port near Naivasha town.

"The SGR extension to Naivasha is now complete and on Wednesday the Head of State will officially launch it by opening all the stations along the route. The president will also use the occasion to launch the Internal Container Depot which will be located around the 1,000 acres gazetted for the industrial park," Mathioya was quoted by Xinhua News.
