Police have launched a manhunt for a driver who took off after crashing a bus full of passengers in Gilgil, Nakuru on Friday evening, November 27.
On Saturday, November 28, Gilgil Deputy Subcounty Police Commander Henry Mbogo detailed that the bus had 30 occupants.
Local dailies reported that 13 passengers sustained injuries with no deaths reported. The 13 were rushed to Gilgil Subcounty Hospital.
However, KTN News anchor Ali Manzu later claimed that the 13 who were injured succumbed to their injuries.
Mbogo disclosed that the 30 occupants involved in the incident included children who were traveling back to Thika from a burial in Kangui, Ol Joro Orok, Nyandarua county.
Passengers accused the driver of speeding and failing to observe other traffic rules. The vehicle was towed to Gilgil police station.
A survey by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) in November 2020 detailed that there was an increase in road accidents in October 2020 as compared to the same period in 2019.
NTSA said that there was an increase of 5.8 percent in road fatalities as of October 31. 3,114 died that month as compared to 2,942 in October 2019.
The authority blamed accidents on reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, drunk driving, drunk walking, drunk riding, failure to use helmets among other issues are some of the factors that attribute to the increase in road accidents.
Some of the measures that the authority took to reduce the accidents included; road mainstreaming in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) which is implemented through the government performance contracting.
