Police officers are working to unravel a case whereby CCTV cameras caught a man breaking into Laikipia County offices on Thursday, July 1.
He later entered different offices and tore documents.
According to police, the man accessed the Assembly buildings at night and went into several offices but later left without stealing anything.
He was, however, caught on CCTV footage going through documents and while in one of the offices where the intruder destroyed a computer.
“He came last night, we do not know who he was, and he did not steal anything, but he destroyed one computer,” Assembly Speaker Patrick Waigwa told the media.
“We have requested members of staff and the county assembly to stay away from the office because we do not know the motive of the intruder,” he added.
The Speaker further told the press that the police officers had finalized their investigation into the burglary and assured them that there was no security threat.
“Whenever an unknown person intrudes at your place at night, it raises eyebrows on his or her intention. The security experts inspected the entire building and they have assured us that there is no security threat since they did not find any harmful devices,” he commented.
Nanyuki police were joined by their counterparts from Nyeri during the probe. Investigators dusted fingerprints from the files the intruder had touched in order to establish who he was.
Laikipia county legislators have previously been involved in brawls over house business.
In 2020 fire burnt down a section of the offices of the County Government of Kisumu. The incident occurred on the second floor of Prosperity House where the county government offices are situated.
Quoting a source from the scene, the Integrated Financial Management Information System (IFMIS) was among the affected with crucial documents that were part of the pending bills the county government owed its contractors being destroyed.
The Garissa County Assembly building was engulfed in a huge fire in January 2021.
The trend was suspected to be a continuation of a series of government offices alleged to be burnt down in an attempt to scuttle investigations into corrupt dealings.
