Deputy President William Ruto has reacted to the Court of Appeal judgement that nullified the Building Bridges Initiative. The seven-judge bench upheld the High Court ruling which declared the BBI null and void.
Ruto thanked his Heavenly Father, stating that he had salvaged Kenya from the Constitutional changes and the powerful politicians who were out to ride on the project into State House.
"God, our Heavenly Father, has come through for Kenya and stopped the coalition of the known, the mighty, and the powerful from destroying our Constitution," tweeted Ruto.
"Our God, help the alliance of the unknown, the jobless, the hustlers and struggling farmers to now engineer our economy from bottom up," Ruto tweeted, in a post perceived as targeting his boss President, Uhuru Kenyatta, Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader, Raila Odinga, and One Kenya Alliance (OKA) led by Musalia Mudavadai (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Moses Wetangula (Ford-Kenya) and Gideon Moi (Kanu).
"In the end, Kenya has won. Justice Be Our Shield and Defender. God bless Kenya and God bless us all."
In court, Siaya Senator James Orengo lauded the judges and his colleagues who he stated had put all the effort into the case. Orengo represented the pro-BBI team at the Court of Appeal.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka noted that no nation can exist outside the rule of law and no constitution can exist without constitutionalism. He urged all leaders to respect the Court of Appeal decision.
ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi, on his end, noted that Kenyans deserve to be applauded for staying together despite the differences witnessed throughout the process.
"We should focus on the future," Mudavadi stated.
Nairobi Senator Johnson Sakaja and Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Mutuka Kilonzo in a joint statement added that the position of the Court of Appeal ought to be respected even if not entirely agreed upon.
"We have supported this process from the beginning because of our belief in a united country. The divisive nature of our politics and the winner takes all at a zero-sum game that we have been part of as a country for decades has only served to make us less united.
"It is now time for us as leaders, from all different shades of the political divide, to have an honest conversation with each other. We urge our colleagues in Parliament to put the country first as we had proposed that we isolate issues of consensus and make necessary interventions after the High Court ruling."
Elgeyo Marakwet Senator, Kipchumba Murkomen, said: "Congratulations to the judges, advocates, appellants, respondents, those who supported the process behind the scenes and all who contributed to the success of the process."
