4 Dead After Vehicle Rams Into Trailer

Four people died at the Kerita area along the busy Eldoret - Nakuru highway after the vehicle they were travelling in rammed into a trailer.

Police say that the vehicle was heading to Eldoret from Nakuru when it collided with an oncoming trailer on Friday morning, December 24, 2021.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander, Ayub Gitonga, confirmed the accident adding that witnesses had reported that the vehicle was being driven recklessly.

The driver was reportedly overtaking other vehicles hastily before the head-on collision with the trailer.

The County Police Commander stated that the bodies of the deceased were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

This comes barely a day after four people died and 36 others were injured in a road accident along the Nairobi - Mombasa highway.

Voi Sub County police boss, Benastine Shari, stated that the accident at Manyani involved a bus and a truck.

Moi County Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent, Felix Kimotho, stated that they received four bodies and treated 36 patients. He added that three of the accident victims were in critical condition.

According to statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the total number of victims increased from 15,918 by December 16, 2020, to the current 19,571.

The report issued by Government Spokesman, Col (Retired) Cyrus Oguna, indicated that the number of people killed and injured in road crashes in Kenya went up by 17.3 per cent December this year compared to the same period last year.

Motorcyclists accounted for the highest number of those killed, with 1634 fatalities, followed by pedestrians at 1477 while passengers were third at 727, with drivers coming fourth at 426.

The number of road accidents fatalities across the country was 3,707 in 2020 compared to 4,347 by mid-December 2021, the highest in five years, representing a 17.3 per cent increase.

The NTSA’s road safety status report indicated that 4,347 people were seriously injured up from 3,707 last year.
