AG Muigai Asked to Resign After Losing Case Against Atheists

Atheists In Kenya (AIK) have asked the Attorney General Professor Githu Muigai to resign after they won an appeal against him.

This comes after the High Court overturned a decision by Prof Muigai to deregistered the atheists' group.

The atheists' society demanded the resignation of Prof Muigai, whom they accuse of bias.

“As far as we are concerned, he is not fit to be the government’s legal adviser,” AIK President Harrison Mumia stated.

“Prof Muigai has demonstrated that he cannot protect and defend the country’s Constitution. He cannot protect minorities and is openly biased against atheists,” he added.

Mumia maintained that disbanding the group was unconstitutional and accused Prof Muigai of bowing to pressure from religious leaders.

“We were surprised when the AG yielded to pressure from religious groups and suspended our group,” Mumia stated.

“We moved to the High Court because we believed the suspension was done in bad faith and was unlawful and unconstitutional,” he added.

Atheists In Kenya was registered on February 17, 2016, but received a suspension letter from Registrar of Societies Mukulu Kariuki two months later.

The decision came after religious leaders called for the disbandment of the group barely two weeks after it was registered.

A letter submitted to the court showed that the Attorney-General received complaints from the public regarding the society’s activities and raised concerns that AIK had made pronouncements that threatened peace.
