Gov Mutua Confirms he Will Battle DP Ruto for 2022 Presidency

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua on Wednesday stated that his 2022 Presidential bid is still alive.

Speaking during a funeral service in Embu County, Dr Mutua reiterated that he is still seeking to consolidate the gains made by the current regime.

He further added that he supported President Uhuru Kenyatta for his second term to enable him continue with projects he had started like the Standard Gauge Railway.

“It is high time that people took demands for accountability a notch higher to redeem the image of our public service,” remarked Mutua.

The Governor's ambitious bid might see him clash with Deputy President William Ruto who is believed to be Jubilee Party's first choice candidate to take over from Kenyatta.

However, it is not clear whether he will be part of Jubilee and take on Ruto in the party's primaries.

The election is still some time away but politicians are already strategising on how to emerge victorious.

Earlier this year, Nyeri Town MP, Ngunjiri Wambugu, explained why Ruto is not guaranteed support from the Mt Kenya region in the 2022 General Election.

In an opinion piece published in one of the local dailies, Wambugu stated that the person they will back in 2022 depends on what happens between now and the election.

He affirmed that if they felt shortchanged, "they would revisit".

"We will also revisit many issues that will happen during the next four years when we go to make decisions in 2022. (For example, when the President asks MPs to distribute committee leadership positions in Parliament inclusively to ensure we have a good balance and some refuse to heed his call, we note this and will revisit)," Wambugu wrote.

The first-term MP affirmed that the most important thing to them was to see President Uhuru Kenyatta's legacy secured.
