DP Ruto Has No Role in Govt - Murkomen [VIDEO]

Deputy President William Ruto's role in the government was put into question by Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen.

In a video shared by Suba North MP, Millie Mabona, on Thursday, January 2, 2020, the senator called for clarification in the DP's role, a position he described as ceremonial according to the current constitution.

"His office has not been mandated to carry out specific tasks up to date, he stated.

"What has the Cabinet since 2013 determined as the function of the deputy president?" he wondered.

The Senate majority leader went on to castigate politicians who were pushing for the creation of new positions, including the post of a prime minister.

"Before you tell us you want to create more positions, tell us what exactly is the defined responsibility of the deputy president under this constitution," he remarked.

Murkomen lauded DP Ruto for launching development projects across the country, adding that all those opposed to the deputy president's actions should come up with a clear portfolio of what they expected of the country's second in command.

"The vice president under the old constitution used to chair Cabinet sub-committees. But since 2013, we have never heard of Ruto chairing any sub-committee," the senator articulated.

According to the Constitution of Kenya Chapter 147, Article 2, "The deputy president shall perform the functions conferred by this Constitution and any other functions of the president as the president may assign."

Murkomen made it clear that there was a need to ensure the second biggest office in the country was accorded the respect it deserves.
