Education Cabinet Secretary on Saturday, July 18, clarified that the government had not yet cleared any university for re-opening.

Speaking while touring Asumbi Teachers Training College at Asumbi town, in Homa Bay County, the CS denied reports that Chuka Univerisity was the first institution to be cleared for re-opening.

"The government has not cleared any university for reopening. Chuka University has not been cleared for reopening unless they cleared themselves," he affirmed noting that for an institution to be given the go-ahead, it needed a certificate from his office or from the Education Principal Secretary.

He further stated that several Universities had taken preventive measures on their campuses and noted that Strathmore University was the only institution that was about to get cleared.

"Even then, they still have several measures to meet before we clear them," he added.

CS Magoha further stated that upon inspecting various institutions, he observed that some measures still needed to be taken before being cleared to operate.

While touring Kericho Teachers College he noted that more water points were needed as well as the adoption of automatic hand sanitisers.

At Asumbi TTC he conveyed that the administration was required to train the staff on better prevention measures as he pointed out that some were not wearing their masks appropriately.

Reports of Chuka University being cleared to re-open in August came after PS University Education and Research Amb. Simon Nabukwesi toured the institution in Tharaka Nithi county.

Nabukwesi announced that the ministry was satisfied with the guidelines the university had followed ahead of re-opening in August.

Nabukwesi had visited the institution for inspection on Tuesday and was satisfied with the measures put in place.

The PS stated that postgraduate students in their final academic years in masters and PhD programmes, would be given the first priority.
