NTV's Digital and Innovation Editor Dann Mwangi has shared insights into how he landed a job at Nation Media Group (NMG), nurturing a career that has made him one of the top media celebrities.
In an interview with NTV on Wednesday, November 11, the business anchor disclosed that he was also an artist and used to perform during night gigs in Nairobi.
While performing on one occasion, after he had completed his studies at Kenyatta University, Mwangi met Julie Wang'ombe.
Julie is the daughter of former NMG CEO Linus Gitahi. She is also a poet and is credited with writing the victory speech for President Uhuru Kenyatta in March 2013 at the tender age of 22.
The two became acquainted with each other and the anchor invited her to more events where he was performing.
However, the lady was then underage and the father used to accompany her to most of the events.
"When I invited Mr Gitahi for my thanksgiving ceremony after I graduated, he excused himself stating that he may be unavailable.
"He instead asked if I would like to join NMG Graduate Trainee class," Mwangi stated.
The trainee program involves the media house absorbing several graduates from Kenyan universities who are taken through media training before being released into the market. Some of them are retained by NTV.
Mwangi wasn't aware of the program and Gitahi intervened by asking the HR to call and explain to him about the training.
He was posted to the TV reporting desk and three months later was transferred to the business desk.
I think they saw that I was capable of writing and I had the ability to tell stories. All they had to do is empower me with more skills and horn those I already had. I, however, did not want to be on TV but the HR declined and pushed me to embrace it. I was told I would be a TV reporter," Mwangi recalled.
Mwangi is married to one Wangechi Muthaigi and the couple have two beautiful daughters. The couple wedded in 2015.
The anchor also still performs at events as a gospel musician.
