Where are They Now? 5 Media Anchors Who Graced Kenyan TV

Kenya has witnessed a number of media stars rise to grace the TV screens over the years.

Most of the faces kept Kenyans glued to their screens especially just at the turn of the millennium, a period that came to be known as the golden age of TV news.

Some of those stars who became household names in Kenya especially from 2000 and immediately thereafter, have their names firmly written in the minds and memory of many. Some rose to higher status even after leaving TV, while others had their TV careers sway, prompting them to stay away from the limelight.

Kenyans.co.ke takes a look at five TV anchors who were a common fixture on the screens a few years ago, and looks at what it is they are currently engaged in.

Sophie Ikenye

The celebrated news anchor's career spans over two decades as she spent the better part of it anchoring news at NTV for 12 years. 

The veteran anchor departed the station in 2009 and is a currently presenter at the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London, where she hosts a programme called Focus in Africa. 

She previously revealed in a local publication that her love for the world of media began during her childhood days. She ultimately noted that she couldn't pass the opportunity at BBC to tell real African stories and finding different angles to present them.

Winnie Mukami

Winni Mukami began her career journey at KBC as a TV and radio current affairs presenter. 

Two years later, she became one of the pioneer anchors to join NTV and quickly rose to fame.

However, in 2010, she left the station and founded her own public relations consultancy firm known as Winners Frontiers International Limited which she runs to date.

She noted that her 8-year career in the media industry has given her valuable experience which served as a stepping stone to her launching her own company.

Ann Ngugi

The critically acclaimed Swahili news presenter is known for her stint at KTN.

After working for the station, she jumped ship to K24 where she was fired while five months pregnant. 

She however, bounced back and joined the international broadcaster BBC as a presenter where she hosts the Dira Ya Dunia programme.

Peninah Karibe

The famed presenter, boasting close to two decades experience, began her career at KBC Radio where she stayed for five years as a presenter.

She eventually branched out to television and joined NTV as a weather presenter and later doubled up as a news anchor and reporter.

Known for her coverage during the 2007 General Election and 2010 Constitution Referendum, the presenter eventually landed an international role at CGTN in 2011  where she currently is one of the main news anchors.

Catherine Kasavuli

Her journey in the media industry dates back to 1980. She started as a radio continuity announcer before ultimately joining TV in 1985.

Kasavuli, a veteran news anchor, boasts an impressive 30 years of experience in the industry, and has worked in different media stations including; KBC, KTN and Citizen TV, before she finally quit in 2015.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous awards in the media industry, including an accolade, 'The Order of the Grand Warrior of Kenya' from former President Mwai Kibaki.

Moreover, she is famed for being the first news anchor to conduct a live bulletin in Kenya.

She ultimately made a comeback at KTN News where she was working as a voice coach.
