Motorists using Mombasa road have raised the alarm over unmarked trenches on the road with the ongoing construction.

Over the past week, users of the road have observed that vehicles have been plunging in the ditches which are by the side of the road and at times on lanes that end abruptly.

Motorists observed a deep excavation in particular below the GM footbridge where several vehicles had fallen in due to poor signage.

Some reporting seeing at least an incident of a car falling into the ditch a day since the week began.

On the other hand, some were of the opinion that drivers on the road should practice caution.

"Signage or not! Exercise caution while driving, especially knowing that there is an ongoing road construction project should be the driver's priority, from your picture's it clearly shows negligent driving! Access barriers have clear been knocked over!," Ravi Chaniynara noted.

Mombasa Road has in the past months been plagued with heavy traffic due to the ongoing construction of the Nairobi Expressway that has seen lanes hived off for the construction of the elevated road.

Earlier in March 2021, motorists plying the Nairobi-Western Bypass raised concerns over numerous accidents occurring on the road due to a lack of signage.

A number of drivers claimed to have hit the unmarked bumps punctuating the road, especially when driving at high speed.

Addressing the issue, a traffic police officer manning the busy road pointed out that some reckless drivers had shown open disregard to traffic rules which have led to more accidents. The officer urged motorists to be keen when using the road.
