The former Head of Public Service, Richard Leakey, was buried on Monday, January 3, 2022.

In a statement released to the media, the Leakey family announced that they paid their final respects to him in a private ceremony a day after he passed on.

Leakey's body was laid to rest in a special place in honour of a request made by the deceased.

"In keeping with Richard's wishes, we, this afternoon, interred his body at a place of his choosing, on his favourite ridge overlooking the majestic Rift Valley that he so loved," the statement read in part.

While acknowledging the support they received from the public, the family requested to be left to mourn in private.

They also noted that they would not be allowing visitors to their home, citing the Covid-19 protocols issued by the Ministry of Health.

Notably, the high infection rate in the country would pose a threat to Meave, Leakey's widow.

"Given the vulnerability of Richard's widow, Meave, we will not be allowing any visits to the home. The family also requests no flowers," the family declared.

Members of the public who wish to send messages of condolence will do so through condolence books which will be made available at the National Museum and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) offices.

In addition, they can pay their tributes to the paleoanthropologist on the ForeverMissed memorial site.

Arrangements will be made for a celebration of Leakey's life on a later date which will be communicated in due course.

Leakey passed away on January 2. President Uhuru Kenyatta eulogized him as a celebrated conservationist who played a great role in preserving the country's wildlife.
