Eldoret businessman, Jackson Kiprotich Kibor, popularly known as Mzee Kibor, will be buried next to his first wife, the late Mary Kibor, the family has revealed.

According to Philip Kibor, the family spokesperson, the businessman bought the Kabenes farm in 1968 and his first wife was interred there upon her demise in 2010.

Philip added that Mzee Kibor sought to follow suit and be buried next to Mary, who was also her business partner in the farm since the 1960s.

Further, the powerful Moi-era politician settled for the Kabenes farm as his burial site in accordance with the Nandi culture. This is despite the businessman owning multiple farms in Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia counties.

“At the time of my mother’s death, she was living in Kitale, and mzee was based here in Uasin Gishu. He decided that his first wife be interred here where he was living, saying that he would follow suit,” Philip, who is also Kibor's eldest son, stated.

Reminiscing his father's strict nature, Philip pointed out that Mzee Kibor was a traditionalist at heart but gave his children the leeway to choose their own path.

"He was a traditionalist, but in the same breath, liberal. This, he, demonstrated during the passing of rites and in matters of religion.

"He encouraged his sons to pick whether to embrace the traditional passage of rites (circumcision) or the religious one. He also did not want his children to be forced to go to church," he noted.

Mzee Kibor is set to be buried on Friday, April 1, in order to give family members living abroad adequate time to arrive in the country.

"Mzee was a man of the people. He had many friends and treasured his neighbours. Over the past days, we have been welcoming his friends who have been travelling here from other countries and counties to help plan a befitting send-off. With regard to this, everyone will be allowed to attend his funeral ceremony,” Philip affirmed.

Mzee Kibor, known for his controversial relationships, had four wives and over 20 children.
