Politicians Making Comeback After Years in The Cold

With the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) finalizing the vote tallying process across the country, a number of politicians are set to make a comeback after successfully contesting for various seats in the just concluded August 9 polls.

Samuel Chepkonga will return to the National Assembly after being declared the Ainapkoi MP-elect after defeating the incumbent, William Chepkut.

Chepkonga won the seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket with Chepkut conceding defeat hours before the official declaration by the IEBC.

Chepkonga lost to Chepkut in the 2017 polls. 

On the other hand, former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary, Mwangi Kiunjuri, is set to make a comeback after winning the Laikipia East parliamentary seat.

The Kenya Kwanza politician was vying on his party - The Service Party (TSP). Kiunjuri served as Laikipia East MP from 1997 - 2013. In the 2013 elections, he contested for the Laikipia gubernatorial seat but lost to Joshua Irungu.

Other Mount Kenya leaders making a comeback to parliament include Gachoki Gitari, the MP-elect for Kirinyaga Central and Joseph Mburu the MP-elect for Lari.

Gitari served as Kirinyaga Central MP from 2013 to 2017 before joining Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua's gubernatorial team as her running mate.

In Busia county, Mary Emase will make a comeback to Parliament after winning the Teso South parliamentary seat. She won the seat on a UDA ticket.

Emase lost in 2017 to ODM's Omuse Geoffrey.

In the Senate, Boni Kalwale is set to make a comeback after leading in the Kakamega senatorial race. The veteran politician was contesting for the seat on a UDA ticket. Khalwale served as a Senator from 2013 to 2017 before unsuccessfully vying for the Kakamega gubernatorial seat in 2017.

Also joining him will be Danson Mungatana who was declared the Tana River Senator-elect.

Mungatana served as the Garsen MP from 2003 to 2013.
