The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) has limited payments of monthly statutory deductions to M-Pesa and five other banks.

In a notice dated October 7, the state agency notified its members that they can remit their monthly contributions through the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Equity Bank.

The two other financial institutions are the National Bank of Kenya and the NCBA Bank.

Kenyans not formally employed were advised to make use of the Mpesa pay bill number - 200222.

However, NHIF noted that employers would still be able to remit their statutory deductions through the mobile money platform.

"This is to inform members and employers that they should only use the following channels to remit their NHIF M-Pesa paybill number 200222.

"Self-employed Kenyans should use their ID number as the account number while employers should use E-slip number as the account number," read the notice in part.

NHIF further warned Kenyans against making payments on any other platforms even as a section of Kenyans urged it to increase the number of banks on its list.

Kenyans covered by NHIF are required to make monthly payments to the insurance scheme in order to receive treatment.

The amount remitted for employees depends on one's salary.

Notably, in 2021, Parliament made changes to the NHIF act making it mandatory for all Kenyans above the age of 18 years to contribute to the fund.

The legislator put the minimum contribution at Ksh500 monthly which is equivalent to Ksh6,000 per annum.
