Mary Chebukati Wanyonyi is angling herself to keep the family legacy alive by joining President William Ruto's government through a Principal Secretary position.

She is set to face the Public Service Commission interview panel on Wednesday, October 12, being among the first candidates to be assessed for the PS role.

Chebukati's wife expressed interest in joining Ruto's government due to her academic qualifications, including holding a master's degree in Business Administration. She is also a certified public accountant and a mediator.

Her appointment in the government would be critical in keeping her family legacy alive with her husband, Wafula Chebukati's term as chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) set to end in January 2023.

Chebukati was hailed by President Ruto as a national hero after the August 9 General Election.

"I want to say, without any fear of contradiction, that one Wafula Chebukati is our hero.

"Soft-spoken but firm. I want to tell you, Chairman we are very proud that without informing any of us, you put all the results from all the polling stations on a public portal where every Kenyan could access," Ruto stated in his victory speech.

The IEBC chair was appointed to the position in January 2017, overseeing his first election in August of that year and a subsequent repeat election in November.

With Chebukati leaving IEBC, political pundits opined that Mary may try to fit in his pocket in a different docket.

She previously served as Senior Deputy Accountant General and Head of the Accounting Unit at the Ministry of Lands in her illustrious career.

Mary is among over 500 candidates who expressed interest in the PS position. Others included former nominated MP David Sankok, Chief Administrative Secretaries Mercy Mwangangi and Charles Hinga.

Former Lang'ata MP Nixon Korir and IEBC Commissioner Boya Molu were also shortlisted.
