The suspects shot in the air before launching an attack at the supermarket, sparking confusion and panic among the staff and shoppers.

"This happened at the Mora Supermarket in Suneka, Kisii county. Isn't it too early for them to raid a supermarket at this hour," the eyewitness who captured the incident on camera lamented.

As one of the suspects guarded the entry, keeping an eye on impending counter-attacks, the others broke into a booth inside the supermarket and stashed an unknown amount of money into their bags.

Reports indicated that they only targeted the booth as the other goods within the supermarket remained intact.

A supermarket guard reportedly lost his life on the spot in the commotion that ensued. The body of the 60-year-old man was ferried to the Nyangena Hospital mortuary pending an autopsy.

Two other workers at the supermarket who sustained gun injuries were rushed to the Marble Hospital in Suneka for assessment, first aid treatment and admission.

The gang of nine fled the scene on motorcycles as the crowd chased after them, baying for their blood. Police launched a manhunt for the suspects after commencing investigations into the incident.

They also cordoned off the crime scene to preserve evidence and conduct fingerprint analysis and ballistic examination. Police have yet to establish whether the raid was part of an inside job or an impromptu attack.
