The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has vowed to take legal action against airport personnel involved in human smuggling at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
According to the intelligence agency, several employees from various agencies are involved in the illegal trade, where they smuggle people from one country to the other through the international airport.
Per DCI’s statement, the persons involved include National Police service personnel, Kenya Airports Authority personnel, Immigration personnel and airline personnel.
The letter dated September 6, was signed by the commanding officer of the anti-terrorism unit at JKIA.
It was addressed to the station manager of Qatar Airways at the airport, who confirmed its receipt on September 11.
“This office has noted with a lot of concern that people are being smuggled in and out of the country through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with the assistance of airport staff,” the letter read in parts.
“This serves as a warning to all agencies named to desist from the practice. Legal action will be taken on anyone caught,” DCI cautioned.
The brief comes just a day after several Kenyans flocked to Al Janoub Stadium in Doha, Qatar to support Kenya’s Harambee Stars that were playing the Qataris.
Reports indicate that a record 11,000 Kenyan Nationals filled the stadium much to the amazement of the football team that won the match by two goals.
Videos of the packed stadium doing rounds on social media raised questions as to how many Kenyans are actually in the Asian Nation.
Nonetheless, Harambee stars were grateful for the support lauding Kenyans for cheering for them in the foreign country.
“I want to say thanks to the Kenyans in Qatar for coming out to support our team and this shows there is a lot of interest among Kenyans trying to support the team. It gave us a good momentum and a good boost because when you give the fans out there, you want to give 100percent,” the football club's skipper Michael Olunga stated.
