Matiang'i Orders Universities Not to Pay Striking Lecturers

Tension is high in all public universities after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i issued tough orders restricting the payment of over 9000 lecturers, currently on strike.

Dr Matiang'i stated that the industrial action was illegal and instructed vice chancellors of all public varsities to punish the dons.

In a letter dated March 3, the CS ordered the withholding of salaries from February when the lecturers downed their tools.

Matiangi highlighted that the dons should not withdraw their labour while taking part in negotiations.

Earlier, the CS had indicated that the negotiation of the lecturers' salaries was not in his docket.

"I am constrained by the Constitution, the law, employment and labour relations practice from intervening in the ongoing negotiations because I believe the negotiating team is doing a good job," the CS mentioned.

Learning at all public universities has been at a standstill for 45 days now forcing some institutions to close indefinitely.
