Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya has been put on the spot over money contributed during a requiem mass for the Kericho bus accident victims.
On Wednesday, some of the victims’ families camped outside the county government offices demanding to be paid their dues two weeks since the money was given out.
Earlier on, people who had lost their loved ones in the grisly accident pitched tent at Muliro Gardens after their efforts to get the cash failed.
On Thursday Oparanya held a presser at his office and termed the claims as baseless citing the families had already been compenstated.
He stated that the money raised for the 34 victims had been shared equally with each family getting Ksh 46,000.
“The county also procured hearse and buses for all the families to ferry the bodies and mourners.”
The governor also dismissed claims that Ksh 7million was raised during the mass.
“Those claiming not to have received money are opportunists out to reap from where they did not plant,” the county boss remarked.
Several leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto were present during a requiem mass for the victims of the accident held at Amalemba Primary School grounds on October 17.
Uhuru donated Ksh 2.5million while Ruto gave out Ksh 500,000 on top of 58 bags of maize.
Oparanya contributed Ksh 1million.
The fatal accident occurred on October 10 after a Homeboyz bus brakes failed and the driver lost control of the vehicle.
The bus rolled several times claiming the live of 54 people along Londiani-Muhoroni-Kisumu road ner Fort Ternan in Kericho.
