Health CS Mutahi Kagwe discovered his passion and desire to be a politician while working at The Standard, for two years between 1987 and 1989, as his career steadily witnessed growth from a campaign strategist, to an MP, a Senator and later, a Cabinet Secretary.
Little is know of his job and roles and the projects he worked on while at the Standard, as many are familiar with his political career and his frontline fight against Coronavirus (Covid-19).
In an interview with KTN News in 2017, CS Kagwe detailed that before joining Standard he first worked at Viva Magazine, under veteran journalist Salim Lone, who is also Raila Odinga's (ODM leader) former spokesperson.
"I joined Viva, where I worked under Salim Lone who was then Editor in Chief. I was made a manager of one of their publication known as Mashambani. I used to sell advertising spaces from chemicals to all sorts of agricultural products.
"Frome Viva I joined the Standard as an Assistant Advertising Manager and was later promoted to Commercial Director," Kagwe disclosed.
While at Standard, he led projects aligned with corporate social responsibility (CSR), whereby he interacted more with Kenyans in the field, conducting Harambees and raising money for the vulnerable.
"In 1992 when hunger struck Kenya, we did a big project dubbed Operation Kenya for Kenyans where we raised money for those affected," Kagwe recalled.
The CSR inspired him into politics as he left the mainstream media to launch his own firm Tell-Em, a Public Relations company.
That same year, he joined the presidential campaign team drafted for former President Mwai Kibaki, in Kenya's first multi-party elections, and later became an MP for Mukurweini in 2002.
"Political theory is one thing, the political game is something different. I decided it was time to try my hand in it instead of helping people win and also staying aside watching as situations I could change kept unfolding," he recalled.
