Lands Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Kimani Ngunjri broke his silence after he drew and fired his pistol in an escalated confrontation over land.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, CAS Ngunjiri admitted to opening fire but explained it was in self defence.

He stated that the crowd of about 50 youths ambushed him on his farm, claiming that he was an intruder.

"I leased the land for farming activities. The mob stormed the farm and accused me of encroaching on the land before demanding that I leave.

"I explained that I had leased the land for five years since 2018 and even presented the lease agreement," the CAS stated.

However, the crowd began charging towards him, led by the man captured in the video wielding an axe. He drew his pistol in an attempt to scare them, but it was in vain.

"The man moved towards me and wanted to strike me with the axe. I fired the second round in self defence  and one person was stuck." Ngunjiri sated.

Nonetheless, he claimed that the man struck by the bullet was trying to save him from the assailant.

The former Bahati Member of Parliament (MP) explained that the injury sustained was no more than a bullet bruise. He too was injured in the fracas.

"After I opened fire, the crown started pelting stones at me. One of the rocks hit me on my shoulder, causing a dislocation," the ex-MP narrated.

He added that the man in the axe was arrested by police officers but jumped off the moving land cruiser as he was being ferried to the police station.

At the time of publishing this article, the CAS was at the police station recording a statement on the incident. Police launched a probe into the matter.

Initial reports when the video surfaced, it was alleged that the man with the axe attacked the Ngunjiri for allegedly physically assaulting his sister.

Citizen TV journalist Sam Gituku is set to replace Francis Gachuri, on the News Gang show starting Thursday, April 6.

Sources at the Royal Media Services (RMS) intimated to Kenyans.co.ke that the Day Break show host was picked as Gachuri's replacement after the latter joined the Ministry of Interior.

Ahead of Gituku's unveiling, the station began running a promo of the show set to make a comeback on Thursday.

The station - in the one-minute clip - announced that there would be a new panelist on the show with the identity of the journalist masked.

"On April 6, 2023, a new gangster is on the loos. The gang returns at 9 pm on News Gang only on Citizen TV," the station announced.

Kenyans.co.ke established that other notable journalists had also been considered to take up Gachuri's slot before the management settled on Gituku.

News Night show host Waihiga Mwaura was among the top contenders. The journalist hosts prime-time news on Tuesdays.

Gituku joined RMS in March 2014, as a radio reporter trainee before debuting on TV in November the same same year, rising through the ranks to become a senior journalist and anchor.

A master's degree holder in communication studies, he has been praised for his interviewing skills and mastery of current affairs.

Some of the top politicians he has interviewed include President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Following the exit of Gachuri, News Gang was left with news anchor Yvonne Okwara, Jamila Mohammed and the station's editorial director, Linus Kaikai.

Gachuri bid farewell to the station on March 2 after his appointment as the Head of Communications in the Ministry of Interior.

The former Citizen TV journalist served at the station for 15 years.

A 33-year-old graduate from Igembe North, Meru County, went viral on Thursday, January 26, after he made a passionate public plea.

The man identified as Samuel Meeme, has been jobless for 9 years and is on the verge of sinking into depression.

He has been jobless despite possessing two undergraduate degrees and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Section 2.

Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, Meeme narrated his struggle in seeking employment.

‘I first graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Chuka University in 2014.

“I was full of optimism having attained Second Class Lower Division and started applying for jobs in different financial institutions,” he revealed.

After a year of unsuccessful job hunting, Meeme got a job at a start-up secondary school where he was being paid Ksh6,000 per month.

“I worked at the school from 2015 to 2016 but was dismissed after the government made a directive that all teachers should have a Teachers Service Commission (TSC) number,” Meeme narrated.

Meeme explained that the two years at the secondary school made him fall in love with teaching.

“That is when I decided to go back to the university so that I can become a qualified teacher,” he explained.

“My parents were reluctant to take me back to school as they had already spent a fortune in my first-degree program,” he added.

After pleading with the parents, they agreed to pay 50 per cent of the tuition fees.

“I enrolled at Mount Kenya University for a Bachelor of Education – Mathematics and Business Education option.

“On the weekends, I would look for construction jobs so as to be able to raise the other 50 per cent,” he painfully narrated.

Meeme further told Kenyans.co.ke he ran a small kiosk while in campus to make ends meet.

Despite the challenges, Meeme graduated in 2021 with Second Class Upper Division.

“The first thing I did after graduating was applying for a TSC number for I longed to be back in class teaching and mentoring students.

“When I got the TSC number, I went back to my former school only for the principal to tell me there was no vacancy,” a tearful Meeme narrated.

Since then, Meeme has been making job applications to different schools and financial institutions with no success.

“I am on the brink of despair, I appeal to any Kenyan of goodwill to offer me a job opportunity,” he made a passionate appeal.

Inside Uhuru's Immediate Meeting With Azimio After Ruto Won Elections - Jeremiah Kioni

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta called Azimio la Umoja leaders into a meeting shortly after it became apparent that Azimio la Umoja flag bearer Raila Odinga had lost in the August 2022 polls, Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni has divulged.

In an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, January 24, Kioni revealed that Uhuru made clear his intention to oversee a peaceful handover to President William Ruto despite his firm stance in supporting Raila in the polls.

According to Kioni, the former President had vowed to ensure that the outcome of the much-polarising poll process would not culminate in bloodshed.

At a time when the nation was highly anticipative, Kioni revealed that the former President chose to follow the rule of law despite the reservations raised by his coalition against the transparency of the polls.

“Of course, he had his preferred candidate but even when the preferred candidate was not announced by IEBC or the Supreme Court, the first thing he did was to call us and tell us that we will still hand over power," Kioni told Kenyans.co.ke

“What goes through a mind of a President is unknown to us because we have never been (presidents) but you could imagine because our engagements with him were always that he did not want a single drop of blood because of this election. So whatever it will take, we must do it."

Whilst admitting that the handover did not imply that the opposing faction had accepted defeat, Kioni notes that his party is proud of having led a peaceful transition of power.

He added that the President was aware of plans to ridicule and heckle him at the Kasarani Stadium but still maintained that he would show up to honour his obligation.

"He actually confirmed that he would go to Kasarani. He knew that they would insult him and heckle but he was determined to do the right thing," he stated.

Kioni's revelation came at a time when the position of the former President, who is the current Chairman of the Azimio Coalition, was not clear among Kenyans.

Since his retirement in September 2022, Kenyatta took a backseat in the key matters of the opposing faction and slowed down on commenting about matters of concern to his Azimio Coalition - choosing to concentrate more on his international duties as Kenya's Special Envoy to the East and Central African region.

A section of Azimio had cast their doubts about his role in the election, with some blaming him for the loss in Raila's fifth stab at the presidency.

However, Kioni maintained that he was still an active part of the coalition and was yet to approve Ruto's presidency.

Below is Kenyans.co.ke's interview with Jeremiah Kioni:

Success has and will never occur by accident because it requires perseverance, hard work, sacrifice, and most of all, loving what you do or learning to do.

Those are the words of the late Brazilian superstar Edson Arantes Nascimento popularly known as Pele.

However, in the current Kenyan society, most individuals like to use shortcuts to achieve their desired goals.

One of the few people, who perhaps epitomizes Pele's words, is the famous NTV Swahili news anchor Joshua Makori.

In an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Makori narrated the struggles and sacrifices he had to make to land a lucrative job at the Nation Media Group-owned television station.

Makori's journey to the desk of one of the leading television stations in Eastern and Central Africa started at  Nyangoge - a village situated in the heart of Nyamira County.

During his childhood years at Nyangoge Primary School, he used to adore the football commentary done by the legendary KBC commentator Jack Oyoo Slyvester.

"As a child growing up in the village, I had a dream of becoming a football commentator. I enjoyed listening to famed sports presenter Jack Oyoo Sylvester popularly known as Kaka Jos while in class five.

"I never knew that God had already blessed me with a similar talent. I used to read Swahili storybooks and the entire class would go silent and enjoy my flawless reading as well as the golden voice.

"Within a short time, I started doing commentary at various local tournaments," disclosed Makori.

After completing his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), Makori joined Nyangoge Day Secondary School within the same locality.

He would later ditch the learning institution for the Trans Nzoia County-based Friends Bwake Boys High School from where he sat his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Exams (KCSE).

Makori then enrolled at the Jodan College in Thika to pursue a course in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Before his graduation in 2012, Makori landed a job at the Kibera-based Pamoja FM. It was while working at the radio station that he applied for a job at the defunct QFM which was under the Nation Media Group.

Sadly, QFM did not give him a chance to showcase his brilliant commentary skills. However, as fate would have it, another opportunity knocked on his door and he took it with both arms.

He was employed by the Nation Media Group to do a low-paying manual job (arranging unsold newspapers that were brought back from the market).

It was while doing the newspaper job that Makori did all he could to fulfill his dream of becoming a football presenter.

"I started creating a path to work as a presenter. I used to work without pay at QTV during the day and at night resume my newspaper job.

"Within a year of voluntary work, I was eventually employed by QTV and worked there between 2013 and June 2016, when the television station was closed.

"Thanks to my good work, my bosses transferred me to NTV after the closure of QTV" narrated Makori.

From there, the rest is history. Makori went on to become one of the best Swahili news anchors in the country.

He currently presents news on NTV Jioni, and NTV Adhuhuri and hosts a show called Mikikimikiki that airs every Friday between 12 pm and 1 pm.

His advice to anyone who would like to become a sports journalist is to be patient and work hard.

"To anyone who dreams of becoming a sports journalist, talent and patience are very crucial because the job is not as easy as many people view it.

“The profession involves a lot of work. So, it is very important to work hard and never lose hope," ended Makori.

Cherera Exit: What Law Says About Govt Officials Who Resign With Pending Case

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) vice chairperson Juliana Cherera resigned on Monday, December 5, throwing the impending probe by the tribunal in limbo.

Cherera joined a list of government employees who quit with pending investigations.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke lawyer Martin Oloo explained that the petition against Cherera automatically withered and died after her resignation.

“The purpose of the petition was to remove the commissioners, but now if they resign it means they will not appear before the tribunal,” he explained.

“You only discuss what is before you, and if all commissioners resign then there will be no case for the tribunal to discuss,” he added.

His statements were corroborated by another advocate of the High Court, Duncan Okatch who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke.

“Once you resign that process ought to end, the investigation process aims to recommend your suitability to hold office and once you resign it becomes inconsequential,” Okatch explained.

Resigning amid probe

On whether it is wise to resign in the existence of a pending case, Oloo explained that resignation is a guaranteed constitutional right and Cherera acted within her rights.

“A resignation is allowed at any stage for any employee, and you can resign without due regard of the process.”

“There is a distinct difference between a pending case and resignation though, resignation does not mean you stop facing a continuing case in court,” the veteran lawyer explained.

“Investigations by other agencies like the police cannot be stopped just because a state officer has resigned,” Okatch collaborated.

Oloo further noted that Cherera is a constitutional officer holder and enjoys constitutional protection which requires that only a tribunal can order her removal.

This is different from other state officers who do not enjoy such protection, as some serve at the mercies of the appointing authority - the President.

Tribunal Powers

On whether the tribunal could have initiated criminal proceedings on the IEBC commissioners, Okatch revealed that the tribunal does not have such powers.

“In terms of any criminal culpability, there are other agencies to deal with that,” Okatch cleared the air on the powers of the tribunal.

“Article 251, Sub Article 6 gives tribunal power to make abiding recommendations to the President using available facts,

“So they can make any recommendations as long as they are in line with removal from office because this is not a criminal empowered tribunal,” he quickly added.

Not yet over

What could have happened if the tribunal had found Cherera unfit from holding office, Oloo explained that she would have been removed from office but the law gives her the right to challenge the tribunal findings.

Okatch explained that it is not over for the IEBC commissioners who resigned as any Kenyan can file a criminal case against them but noted chances of such case going through was slim.

“Any Kenyan can write a formal complaint for Cherera and other commissioners to be investigated.”

“However unless you point out a specific criminal act committed, the case cannot sustain and also the commissioner is protected by law in whatever they do in good faith,” the seasoned lawyer told Kenyans.co.ke.

Everyone has hopes and dreams in life and some individuals get to attain them while others fail due to various reasons, among them lack of support and motivation from their loved ones.

There is a norm in most third world countries particularly in Kenya where some parents tend to discourage their kids from pursuing ambitious dreams.

Such parents prefer their kids to follow traditional, often hyped and what appear like high-flying career paths that lead to white collar jobs.

However, not all children have parents who struggle to adjust with the change of time.

Brielle Wanjiru Wahinya, the daughter of KTN News anchor Agnes Gakunga is among the few lucky ones who have supportive parents.

Wanjiru is not your ordinary child. Unlike other kids who prefer to play everyday games like Escape the Lions, Safari and Fix the Reserve, she chose to be involved in a sport that entails rigorous intellectual challenge.

In an exclusive interview with Kenyans.co.ke, Gakunga narrated the inspiring Chess journey of her eldest child.

According to Agnes, Wanjiru’s interest in the game was noticed at a very tender age - while she was still in Grade one.

In most families, when children are asked what they would want to engage in their adult life, most of them normally give the careers of their parents or people close to them.

Wanjiru’s story is different - even prior to the introduction of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC), she knew what she wanted to do in life.

Brielle got interested in a sport that no one close to her plays or used to play during their childhood years.

In fact, Gakunga, who describes her daughter as a positive and optimistic person, used to engage in entirely different games while in school.

“While at high school I used to do athletics and football, but at primary school I was the village champion in catty,” she stated while smiling.

Despite being just 8-years-old, Wanjiru is trying to recruit some members of her family to play the board game.

“She is the only Chess player in the family but she is training her younger brother Curtis Gatlin Wahinya aged 6 who has shown interest in the game,” disclosed Gakunga.

The Mother Danila Primary School pupil has participated in various tournaments across the country, bagging a number of certificates.

Brielle’s mother told us that her daughter’s goal is to represent the country in international competitions.

“Wanjiru has four certificates for which she displays proudly. She participated in Kiambu regional qualifier where she qualified for the National Junior Chess Championship held in Mombasa in April this year.

“Eldoret National Youth Chess Championship held this month was the second national event she ever participated in. Brielle is aiming to represent Kenya in Africa and beyond,” she revealed.

When asked about how the family supports Brielle to follow her dream, Gakunga replied that they go out of their way to make sure she takes part in various competitions.

“As her parents, we always ensure she participates in various tournaments especially in Nairobi and Kiambu. She also plays the game online chiefly on phone so that she can learn various moves and also to practice what she is taught by her Chess Coach.

“Her Chess board is her best friend and we have taught her now how to always take care of it,” ended the University of Nairobi alumna.

It is usually believed that women are better than their male counterparts at multitasking in certain cases.

However, the inspiring story of Benedict Sakali, a professional musician, chef and rugby player will make you think otherwise.

Kenyans.co.ke  had an exclusive interview with Sakali on Monday, September 26, 2022 and learnt more about his life journey and how he manages to balance between music, rugby and being a chef.

Sakali was born in 1994 in Kaimosi, Western Kenya. At a tender age, he moved to Nairobi alongside his family and began his education at Waruku Primary School in Kangemi.

While in school, Sakali played football - he represented his alma mater up to the provincial level.

Sakali later dropped football and embraced rugby when he joined Muvuti Boys High School, a learning institution located in Machakos County.

His talent was there for all to see, and thus while still pursuing his post primary education, Sakali got an opportunity to play for Mount Kenya University and Nairobi Stingers Rugby Clubs before being incorporated into the Shamas Rugby Club.

“In 2016 during Masaku 7s, I was named the man of the match in one of the matches and given a medal. I was also the best player in Machakos County from 2015 to 2017 owing to the number of trophies I received,” he revealed.

Sakali, who was raised by a single mother alongside his other four siblings, ventured into Gospel music in 2019.

“I started music in 2019 after the death of my mother. Things were hard for me, but God gave me strength. I recorded my first song, Pokea Sifa that year.

“The same year, God also opened a way through Shamas Foundation Rugby Club. They found a job for me in the Big Square restaurant. I have risen through the ranks to become a chef master,” explained Sakali.

In June 2022, he dropped another song titled Nararua Moyo and he is planning to release another one this coming October.

When asked about how he manages to balance between playing rugby, cooking and music, the 28-year-old disclosed that time management is key.

“At our restaurant we have two shifts. For example, on Monday I work in the morning shift from 8am to 3pm. I usually attend rugby training between 4pm and 6pm. We train for three days in a week.

“During my off day, this is the time I go to the studio and record my music” concluded Sakali.

Former State House spokesperson and media practitioner, Kanze Dena Mararo, rejected a state job offer from ex-President Uhuru Kenyatta in April 2022 when he rewarded loyalists in his government

Insiders at State House told Kenyans.co.ke that Uhuru had offered Kanze an ambassadorial job alongside Tomas Kwaka Omolo (Big Ted), former Dagoretti South Member of Parliament, Dennis Waweru, and former ICT Principal Secretary, Bitange Ndemo, among others.

However, the former Citizen TV anchor who also served as the head of the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit humbly declined to take the overseas job and requested to remain in Kenya.

“Kanze was loyal to the President, dedicated to her work and she was to be appointed an ambassador when Uhuru appointed envoys,” the source close to the former president divulged.

“He surprised her with cash worth millions,” the insider stated declining to quote the exact amount Kanze received.

The former Citizen TV anchor was cagey with the details of the gift package and also declined to comment on the matter.

“Thank you… no comment,” she told Kenyans.co.ke in response to the matter. We, however, wished her well in her endeavours and appreciated her service to the nation.

Asante,” she added.

Kenya is one of the richest countries in East Africa and is home to several multi-billionaires. Although most of them have appeared on continental or international lists of wealthy people including Forbes Magazine, some of the richest families have chosen to keep a low public profile.

According to a previous Oxfam International report, the gap between the richest and poorest has reached extreme levels in Kenya.

Less than 0.1 per cent of the population (8,300 people) own more wealth than the bottom 99.9 per cent (more than 48 million people). The richest 10 per cent of people in Kenya earned an average 23 times more than the poorest 10 per cent.

Here are three of the wealthiest families in Kenya with interests in different sectors of the economy but keeps a low public profile.

The Ndegwas are associated with what is commonly referred to as old money in Kenya and are ranked among the wealthiest families in the country. The family patriarch, Philip Ndegwa's fortune attracted the attention of Forbes Magazine who phoned the now defunct Economic Review Magazine in Nairobi to confirm if indeed he was the first Kenyan to bank a billion shillings.

His vast wealth - traversing almost all sectors of the economy - has been passed on to his children. His sons, James and Andrew Ndegwa, have widely invested in sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, banking and transport.

The family has stakes in ICEA Lion Insurance, NCBA Bank, Riverside Park and Ambank. According to Forbes, the Ndegwa's net worth is approximately Ksh141.6 billion.

Bhimji Depar Shah’s family tree germinated from Bhimji Depar Shah, a Kenyan businessman of Indian origin born in Mombasa. He is also an industrialist and an entrepreneur. He has two sons namely Tarun Shah and Vimal Shah. His family owns Bidco Africa Group.

He ventured into business while still a teenager. He relocated to Nyeri where he established a petrol station.

He founded Bidco in 1970 for the purpose of producing garments. In 1991, he ventured into manufacturing edible oils and opened a plant in Thika. The firm has over 5,000 staff.

According to Forbes annual ranking of Africa’s richest men in 2015, the family ranked 31st on the continent with a net worth of around Ksh354 billion.
