One Selfie Rescues David from Self-Destructing

David is enjoying a quiet Saturday afternoon with his crew when Brayo comes running towards them. His face lights up at the sight of David as if he remembered something delicate that he, nevertheless, must share.

He lands heavily on the rickety chair that the crew already grew wary of, almost breaking its weak leg. He catches a breath as he smiles wickedly, aware of the attention he has earned from the boys at the hangout bemusingly located right outside a local butchery.

“By the way, have you heard?” he enquires while pulling up the unsteady chair closer to the wall for reinforcement and turns to David. ”Somebody saw your girl - err-your ex - outside the clinic yesterday,” he blurts out with a particular emphasis on ‘the clinic’.

Everybody instantly leans forward and waits for a reaction. David and the girl in question had a sort-of relationship a few months back. It wasn’t meant to last. David, a largely restrained guy, had gone to great lengths to win over Angie, a girl he considered his ideal partner even when he barely knew anything about her.

Their brief courtship period was nothing short of eventful and at some point, he felt he was being drawn into an endless vortex of permissiveness. Luckily, he had ended it before (or so he thought) doing something very out-of-character. But the latest claims now being reinforced by his own buddies are shaking up his self-assurance.

“She was never my girl,” he retorts, clearly losing his composure at the alarming insinuations by his friends. He was particularly angered by his buddies’ failure to raise their objections when he had expressed interest in her and the fact that they seemed to take pleasure in poking fun at his unravelling predicament.

“I have heard things. You should get checked man,” Brayo advises between bouts of insensitive giggling. Nobody says anything but they are all thinking about it. With the growing tension, the subject immediately changes to the upcoming clash between Liverpool and Man City.

The rumours have been spreading like wildfire. He initially ignored them as idle talk. He is not so sure anymore. Even the local Mama Mboga had something to say. A couple of nights ago, he woke up sweating profusely and his muscles and joints were sore. He suspected Malaria but never got the courage to get tested for that either.

He tried to convince himself that his weight loss was due to the recent deterioration of his appetite. Out of desperation, he had turned online to find answers. Self-diagnosis, he thought, was much better than the ‘shame’ of facing a nurse, a decision he was now beginning to regret. With every click of his mouse, his anxiety multiplied. All his supposed symptoms seemed to lead to a conclusion he did not like. The symptoms seemed to mysteriously magnify with every online anecdote. In the last few months, there are nights he has not slept at all.

The football arguments are now getting louder. His friends nudge him for a comment but he is lost in thought. Visiting the clinic is not an option, he figures. Brayo will not let it go until he shares the results with the crew. Besides, the resident nurse is a well-known gossiper - he knows this all too well from his volunteering days at the health centre. The last few times he tried walking into a clinic far from his mtaa, his feet would not shake away the mortifying prospect of being found out. The uncertainty was now ferociously eating into his productivity.

Determined to put an end to his misery, he suddenly rises from his seat. His friends are so preoccupied with the football banter that they do not see him slip out. Perhaps it's time he tries the selfie he has been hearing about. The kit he ordered weeks ago is still stashed somewhere in his wardrobe, away from any would-be prying eyes.

David has made a very important step in taking charge of his health at a time when the Ministry of Health is raising concerns over the rise in new HIV infections among the youth. 2018 data from the ministry shows that over 40 per cent of all new HIV infections occur among youth between 15-24 years.

Let’s face it, HIV testing can be quite a stressful prospect. It is even worse if you recently engaged in a risky sexual encounter or have ever had unprotected sexual relations with a questionable partner. The stress alone is enough to make you mistake normal body sensations or minor symptoms as signs of a positive HIV status.

If you fail to take the right steps, it is possible that you might develop the illness anxiety disorder also known as hypochondriasis. HIV testing is the only way to know your status and finally get some peace of mind.  The distress from worrying can potentially disrupt your social life and productivity at school or work.

Fortunately, testing doesn’t have to involve waiting in long queues anymore or having to endure the embarrassment of explaining your most well-kept secrets to the nurse. The HIV self-testing kit or simply, the selfie, makes the process even faster and simpler, all from the convenience of your home.

To #ChukuaSelfie, you get two testing options to chose from, depending on your preference and they both produce accurate results in just a few minutes. If you are comfortable with a quick needle prick on your finger, the blood test is for you. For those of us who would prefer not to be pricked at all, there is an oral test option where you take a swab of your gum and inner cheeks.

The selfie kits are readily available from your local chemist and online from My DAWA and KASHA at a discount of about 15 per cent.

If your results turn out positive, you must visit a professional testing centre for a confirmatory test because it is possible to have a false positive result. You can also call 1190 to speak to a counsellor discreetly.

If the results turn out negative, you still have to continue practising safe sex and self-testing yourself and your partner(s).

Wacha stress. #ChukuaSelfie - enjoy life.

About Last Night: A Single Memory Lapse Lands Johnie Into Uncharted Waters

You wake up with a beautiful companion in bed. Last night was a blur. As you struggle to open your eyes against the blinding sun rays, you reach out to grab your phone. After fumbling for a while with no success, you grudgingly open your eyes to scan your surroundings. You can’t believe what you are seeing.

THIS IS NOT MY HOUSE! Where am I? You instantly sober up. You turn and take another look at her. She is a complete stranger. A gorgeous stranger. It’s comforting to know that even when completely drunk, you are still very discerning, or to be honest, this is exactly what your promiscuous friends would say.

You are still staring at her face. Her hair has fallen into a neat heap on the pillow, a few wayward strands cover her face. Even without makeup, she quite matches the aspirations of your dreams - your guilty conscience is momentarily shelved.

“Alfie? Where is my friend?” Bits and pieces of the previous night’s festivities begin to flood back. Where did he go? You remember the birthday party. You remember the drinks.

Finally, you decide to quietly sneak out of bed - a skill your buddies gloat to have mastered over the years - but you are a rookie. Only when you take your first step do you realize that you are indubitably unclothed. Consternation unbidden sets in.

Probably one of your most awkward moments ever. Your boys would, however, want to hear every instance of it. You are fumbling, this nightmare needs to end now...“where are my clothes?”  For a moment, you try to recollect how you really ended up here and the prospects of a major blunder.

You have always been careful. Like some EPL fans, “You never walk alone”. You don’t take chances with your health. There is always a condom in your wallet - gambling with your well being has never really excited you.

She wakes up. She doesn’t seem as alarmed as you are. Did we? You manage to ask. She directs you to the sitting room where you find your clothes and other belongings. There is a box on the table. “Wait, is that a pregnancy kit?” You ask your host. “No silly” is her response.

The label reads “OraQuick” - what a relief! After such a fuzzy night, you still had the foresight to insist on grabbing HIV self-test kits on the way? After glancing at the results on the kits still lying on the table, you are instantly thrilled as your trepidation wears off.

You probably can relate all too well with this scenario in the escapades of your youthful exploration. But it is quite likely you have never considered reinforcing the protection you get from condoms with a quick HIV self-test or Kuchukua Selfie with your partner(s) before anything reckless happens.

Of course, a ceremonial selfie photo with your latest catch could be in order if you are so inclined, but even more important is to #ChukuaSelfie using the HIV self-testing kit that allows you to collect samples, conduct the test and obtain the results from the comfort and privacy of your own home within minutes.

OraQuick is a safe method to know your status without needlessly drawing blood. The kit is available online at MY DAWA and KASHA at a 15% discount.

Testing with OraQuick is a simple three-step process. First, swab the outer gums on the upper jaw. Repeat the process for the lower gums. Next, insert the pad into the vial for analysis. The results can be read in 20-30 minutes.

Discovering the Results

You are NEGATIVE IF there is only one line next to the C-LINE. Your status is POSITIVE if there is a line next to the C-LINE and another line next to the T-LINE. Even a very faint line next to the T-line could mean that you are positive.

IF NEGATIVE

Taking a Selfie helps you live freely and confidently. You will do some of your best work if you know there is no risk of contracting HIV. It leaves you free to express yourself. Don’t let your guard down. Insist on taking a Selfie to ensure you are protecting yourself and your partner.

IF POSITIVE

Sometimes life throws a curveball at you. The first thing you are advised to do is visit a clinic to get a confirmation in case you got a false positive. Decades ago, a positive HIV diagnosis was considered a death sentence. Nowadays, it is no longer the case, you can live a full, healthy and productive life by adhering to the freely-available anti-retroviral therapy (ART).

You might be wondering NINI NEXT?. You can CALL 1190 to speak to a counsellor discreetly. Because you have discovered your status early, ART will be much more effective. Through counselling, you will be guided on how to live a confident and happy life. Don’t let this discovery change your life.

You are so glad you insisted on the Selfie. You grab a shower and take a few swipes of her deodorant before you leave.

“When can I see you again stud?” She asks as you walk out the door. You mumble something as you thank your lucky stars. Hopefully, you won’t ever find yourself in this kind of awkwardness again.

9 Inventive Ways to Use Blue Band - Besides Spreading!

Cooking is an art - at least that's what every culinary enthusiast will caption a photo of their carefully - prepared meal on their Instagram profiles.

Such pictures can be an inspiration to experiment with new recipes and ingredients - to prepare a meal a little different with hopefully better results.

We all have our hacks such as a pinch of pepper, a dash of cinnamon or a few drops of tamarind juice to give certain foods a distinct taste.

One of the most common hacks is adding Blue Band to food to make them tastier.

I learnt that the blue band wasn't only for spreading on bread when I visited a relative's house in my teenage years and sneaked to the kitchen to see how they were making the ugali.

At first, I was surprised by the spoonful of Blue Band being added to the boiling water, the end product was different and wonderful. From then on, Ugali has never been the same.

Of course, there are some meals that blue band makes tastier, for example, githeri and porridge - just thinking about it makes my mouth water.

Don't even get me started on toasting bread, the richness the blue band adds while enhancing the flavours is surreal.

You can use blue band while preparing mashed potatoes, mandazis and pancakes for that subtle kick.

You can also use blue band while baking different types of cakes, like coffee, banana, chocolate and even lemon cakes.

Simple meals like rice and spaghetti can also be exciting with a spoonful of blue band while boiling.

Have you tried making popcorn with Blue Band? if you haven't what are you waiting for?

You can keep your party going with the Changamka na BB Ushinde Promotion.

By purchasing Blue band packs of 100gms, 250 gms, 500gm or 1kg, you can participate in a draw to win over Ksh 50 Million worth of shopping vouchers among Other prizes including Kitchen appliances such as toasters, sandwich makers, gas burners and electric kettles.

Co-op Bank Inks Deal for Kenya Farmers

Farmers in Kenya now have a great opportunity to easily acquire farm machinery and equipment following the signing of a joint scheme between the Co-operative Bank and CFAO Kenya Ltd (formally Toyota Tsusho East Africa Ltd).

The new financing scheme will enable farmers and co-operative societies to finance the purchase of tractors, combine harvesters and other farm equipment they need in a more affordable fashion.

This scheme will offer farmers and co-operative societies up to 80% financing, thereby enabling them to acquire brand new machinery and equipment that they need without having to pay the huge costs upfront.

Second, the scheme will give farmers the option of seasonal loan payments, to match with the seasonal nature of some agricultural crop cycles.

Third, farmers will enjoy an extended loan repayment period of up to 60 months, perhaps the longest available in the market today.

Fourth, for customers who pay 50% deposit and repay the loan in 12 months, the loan will not attract any interest charges. As an added benefit, customers will receive 250 kilogrammes of Baraka Fertilizer with the purchase of every tractor under this scheme.

Co-op Bank Director of Co-operatives Banking, Mr. Vincent Marangu and CFAO Kenya Managing Director Mr. Toyoki Kuno, signed on behalf of the respective partners at a ceremony held in CFAO Kenya offices in Nairobi.

Speaking during the launch of the partnership, Mr. Marangu said Co-operative Bank is always looking for ways to assist customers to succeed in their projects and businesses.

"With this partnership, we will enable farmers and co-operative societies to more easily acquire brand new Agri-machinery and equipment from a trusted and leading brand," stated Mr. Marangu.

CFAO Kenya Managing Director, Mr. Toyoki Kuno explained that his company was fully committed to supporting the Big Four Agenda especially food security by providing comprehensive farming solutions which include not just selling tractors, but also providing farming implements and Baraka fertilizer to compliment the crops.

“We will provide continuous operator training and excellent aftersales support. We feel honoured to partner with a bank like the Co-operative Bank that will give access to societies and farmers looking to re-tool, mechanize and upgrade farms through this partnership,” he stated.

CFAO Kenya Ltd is an integrated business group that started in the automotive value chain sector but has evolved beyond its established roots and expanded its portfolio to become a formidable force in various sectors in the region, which include renewable energy, infrastructure development and Agri-mechanization.

CFAO Kenya are the authorized distributors of CASE IH Tractors in Kenya through their Agri Mechanization division headquartered in Nakuru. The tractors’ capacity range from 30 horsepower to 620 horsepower. CFAO range of products and services also include Baraka fertilizer and customer support services backed by a professional team of experts.

Co-operative Bank firmly believes that forming partnerships that benefit customers and the public in general.  It is in this regard that the bank has forged partnerships and alliances with select operators in the economy to enhance and enrich its product development to ensure a wholesome offering to customers.

Agriculture is a key economic driver in Kenya and a key pillar in the pursuit of sustainable food security. Improved mechanization is critical in this regard through changing the focus from subsistence to commercialization.

Technology-based agriculture is not only the future but a necessity for our economy today as it increases agricultural productivity, raises farmers’ incomes, guarantees balanced nutrition for the general population and enhances economic welfare.

Corporates can support this vision by creating such partnerships that enable more Kenyans to be self-reliant.

Co-op Bank Clears The Air on Increasing Interest Rates

Co-operative Bank of Kenya has assured its customers that it will not increase the interest rates on the existing loans.

In a statement dated November 8, the Group Managing Director and CEO Gideon Muriuki stated that the institution would retain existing interest rates in pursuant to the signing of the Finance Bill 2019.

"We are pleased to advise all our customers that Co-op Bank is meanwhile retaining existing interest rates for all our outstanding loans based on existing money market conditions," he stated.

On November 7, President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law which repealed Section 33B of the Banking Act that provided for the capping of Interest rates.

The Act meant that commercial banks and other financial institutions now have the liberty to vary their interest rates on loans.

The president noted that the cap on interest rates had led to a decline in economic growth adding that it had led to an increase in shylocks as banks were giving out fewer loans.

"We note that the move by the government will help to avail necessary credit for the growth of the economy and particularly to the Micro and Small and Medium Enterprises segments that are critical for the growth of our dear economy and job creation," Muriuki further noted.

He concluded, "We will keep you updated on any new developments as we constantly endeavour to give you better services."

Simplified: How to Get The Most Out of the New Safaricom Bundles

Bundles! bundles! bundles!

When you have them, all is right in the world, but when you have one hour left to burn through 1GB, now that’s when a calamity strikes.

In what is a race against time, you find yourself trying to download huge files with hopes that you will get the most out of the remaining bundles.

But alas! The midnight hour strikes and the data disappears - you switch your phone off. Defeated.

There is a sense of empowerment that comes with buying a product and knowing you can use it at your own liberty with no conditions or limiting factors that dictate how you get to enjoy it.

Imagine if after purchasing a really nice shirt at a local shop and going home with it, the dealer sends text messages, reminding you that you are overwearing it and after sometime, comes and takes it away because it has ‘expired’- ludicrous right?

As a buyer, the choice on how to use a product should fall solely on you because after all, the money spent is yours and thought of having to exhaust a product’s use within a set time frame can be anxiety-inducing which should not be the case.

Well, the ‘power of the data’ has been shifted to the consumers quite literally with Safaricom’s No Expiry bundles.

Under the new structure, Safaricom is committing to be Simple, Transparent and Honest across all its products and operations.

As part of its efforts to simplify its products, the company has unveiled a new data plan, and a new calling and SMS plan that will respectively offer data bundles and calling minutes with no expiry. Both Data bundles, and Calls and SMS with no expiry are immediately available on *544#.

You get what you pay for depending on your browsing habits. With the new packages, the amount of bundles is determined by the amount of money you wish to spend.

For example, when you have Ksh100 you can purchase 500MBS worth of data - with no expiry.

The bundles will only end when you complete them, they can stay in your phone forever it you wish - just know the power of the bundles is in your control.

How do I do that? You may ask…

  1. Dial *544# on your handset
  2. Select ‘DATA (NO EXPIRY DATE)’ from the menu
  3. Select purchase for own or other number
  4. Enter the amount you wish to spend (be it 1 bob, Ksh100, Ksh1000 to Ksh999,999)
  5. Select your preferred mode of payment - airtime, M-PESA
  6. You will receive a message with details of your purchase

The no-expiry bundles give you more value for less. For example with Ksh5 you get 10MBs that does not expire while the Normal Bundles With Expiry you get only 7MB which you have to use in just 24 hours.

As for voice, with every purchase of airtime you will get 50% bonus airtime to make calls and SMS’s across all networks. That is, with a purchase of Ksh100 you will get an extra Ksh50 to keep your connections going.

The new tariff is available to all their various categories of customers: prepaid, postpaid and hybrid.

What’s even better you gift your loved ones with the new bundles and extra airtime with the amount you wish.

M-Pesa Rebrands: Has Safaricom Made New Changes to Its Service?

Has Safaricom launched a new logo?

That was the question on many Kenyans minds after the telecommunications giant, on Monday, October 7, posted a picture with four different versions of the mobile money service M-PESA logo.

The post on their social media handles - Facebook, Twitter and Instagram - was accompanied by a simple caption 'Super excited about this new M-PESA logo'.

The post generated curiosity among observant netizens who were quick to notice to give their two cents on what the new log should entail.

Some were for the new logo, "I love it and it looks more attractive," one user wrote.

Others were equally excited by the new graphics but weren't really clear on which was the new logo.

"Super excited too. Which logo are we talking about," another user stated, with another posing, "Which one is the one selected? Or is that all four are the logo?"

Here are some of the reactions:

Other users were more curious about what the new logo meant for them as customers in terms of service.

"Should we expect another feature to M-Pesa with this new logo," a subscriber asked.

Sources at the telco remained tight-lipped if the post had been leaked or if it was indeed a planned move by Safaricom.

"Keep tabs on us here on our social media platform for upcoming updates," a customer service representative stated.

Safaricom pioneered commercial mobile money transfer globally through M-PESA, the most successful service of its kind anywhere in the world.

Launched in March 2007, M-PESA now has over 22.6 million active customers and over 167,000 M-PESA Agent outlets countrywide.

What do you think, should Safaricom adopt the new logo and what new services are you looking forward to?

Co-operative Bank to Support Free Cancer Screening Campaign

The recent surge of cancer-related health challenges facing the country has brought to the fore the need to ramp-up early cancer screening campaigns to help identify, in good time, cases where early intervention can help.

It is in this spirit that the Beth Mugo Cancer Foundation in collaboration with the Co-operative Bank of Kenya and other partners has drawn out a countrywide program of Free Cancer Screening Camps.

In these camps, Kenyans will get free screening for the key lifestyle diseases that continue to ravage families including cancer, blood sugar disorders, blood pressure and related health needs.

The Co-operative Bank announced that the next Free Cancer Screening Camp will be held on Friday, September 27, 2019, at Lumakanda Primary School in Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County, hosted by the Beth Mugo Foundation in collaboration with the bank, the County Government of Kakamega and other partners.

Everyone in Kakamega and beyond is invited to come for free cancer screening.

The Kakamega event is the second, following the first held in Kisumu in January 2019 where hundreds of residents received free cancer screening and related medical advice.

The Co-operative Bank has made available Ksh10 million to be applied over five years on the prevention of cancer campaign and looks forward to supporting the free cancer screening camps in all counties of Kenya.

It confirmed support for the Free Cancer Screening Campaign alongside other worthy causes that the bank continues to support, including the First Lady’s Beyond Zero Initiative on child and maternal health, the School Fees Bursary Program that has supported over 6,900 gifted but needy students, and capacity-building in the over 15 million-member co-operative movement under the Co-operative Bank Foundation.

Group Managing Director & CEO Co-operative Bank, Dr Gideon Muriuki appealed to other corporate institutions and Kenyans of goodwill to join hands with them and create a movement around the importance of early screening and testing for the key health challenges such as cancer and diabetes that continue to ravage our families causing untold misery mainly due to very late diagnosis.
