Matiang'i Dispels Reports of Disbanding AP Unit

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i on Monday addressed reports that the government was in the process of disbanding the Administration Police (AP) unit.

According to earlier reports, there was a major restructuring in the National Police Service that could see 60,000 officers who serve in the outfit absorbed into the regular police.

Only 10,000 will be retained under a new unit to guard border control points and government buildings.

However, when addressing Joint Security Teams at the Kenya School of  Government (KSG) on Monday, Matiang'i dispelled the claims as unfounded and baseless.

"That would be unconstitutional and if we were to disband it, we would need to change sections of the constitution. Therefore reports in the media that the AP unit has been disbanded are not true," he asserted.

The Interior CS noted that there was a need for enhanced coordination of not only security service providers, but national government services in general.

"Our security agencies and Services must be active, relevant and proactive to ensure the public gets world-class Services at all times.

"The success of security agents in securing our country is largely determined by synergy and unity of purpose. This, therefore, calls for effective and seamless coordination of all security services and development initiatives in the Regions, Counties, Divisions and Stations. Service Delivery and Coordination Units at all levels must be reactivated and re-engineered," the CS affirmed.

Matiang'i further called for enhanced partnerships among stakeholders in sharing information among the security agencies as well as continually deploying the use of technology for a timely response.

"As Coordinators and Commanders of various formations and managers of security, you have the cardinal duty and obligation to provide security to all Kenyans and their property without fear or favour," he conveyed.

The theme for this year is “Re-invigorating performance through systems review and multi-agency collaboration”.

"This theme is a calling to clean all the grey areas in the management of our security systems for better quality, efficient and effective service delivery," he stated.
