Baringo County Assembly blew off the lid on a petrol station at Longisa County Referral Hospital.
The Health and Sanitation committee had summoned health officers when it emerged that a fuel pump was operating inside the hospital.
County Medical Services and Public Health executive Dr Joseph Sitonik, Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Weldon Kirui and administrator Felix Langat appeared before the committee on November 30, to shed light on the matter.
Dr Sitonik who was the first to appear before the panel confirmed existence of a petrol station at the hospital.
He revealed to the panel that the fuel pump was installed without proper permits and approvals.
All county health officers admitted that there was no physical planning certificate availed during installation of the fuel station.
It also emerged that the hospital does not have compliance certificate from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The committee was further told that the station was being sponsored by an anonymous donor.
“The county does not know how much the donor has spent as there is no signed memorandum of understanding with the department of Medical Services and Public Health,” the committee was told.
Perusal of the 2021/2022 budgetary estimates exposed that there was no budget allocated for the pump.
This raised concerns on the petrol station being privately owned but installed in a public facility.
“Through the connections of governor Hilary Barchok, somebody is funding the installation of the tank and the dispensing pump,” Sitonik revealed after questioning
I cannot give you the name of the person,” Sitonik took a stand after being pressed to unmask the person behind the pump.
