A 26-year-old man has been arrested by a multi-agency team of officers in Eldoret after stealing a vehicle belonging to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
In a statement, the DCI reported that the multi-agency team, acting on a tip-off from members of the public, arrested the 26-year-old at his residence in Race Course Estate within Eldoret Township after the White DMAX was stolen from DCI Kondele.
"A multi-agency team comprising of officers from DCI Kondele and DCI Turbo yesterday evening managed to arrest one suspect aged 26 years at his residence," the security agency said in a statement.
During the operation, the detectives managed to recover an assortment of motor vehicle registration number plates, seven ignition keys, and chassis plates among other items from the suspect's home.
The suspect was transported to DCI offices in Kondele as investigations into the matter continue. The recovered items were also seized as exhibits and are currently being held at the outpost awaiting further police action.
This comes after the DCI on January 27, reported that it had recovered more stolen vehicles after declaring war on a car theft syndicate.
In its statement, the DCI stated that following the interrogation of 'notorious' vehicle theft suspects arrested in Nairobi and Nyeri counties, detectives narrowed down their investigations to Nakuru County where they arrested one suspect at Section 58 and recovered a Toyota Vitz from the said person.
Similarly, on January 26, DCI detectives arrested a criminal identified as a prime suspect at his residence in Makongeni Estate in Thika.
During the operation, the police officers recovered a number plate. Upon interrogation, the suspect led them to the home of another suspect in Juja, Kiambu County, where the second suspect was arrested after being found to be in possession of a stolen Toyota Fielder.
Upon further interrogation, the suspects confessed to having stolen an Isuzu DMAX in Kayole, Nairobi County which they sold to a buyer in Nyeri County.
The suspects then led the officers to Narumoru, Nyeri County, where the vehicle was recovered while being driven by the buyer.
The 3 were arrested and escorted to DCI offices in Nairobi for further questioning.
