KCSE 2022: Mother's Plea After Needy A Student Resorts to Jua Kali for Fees

Mother of top Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate in Nakuru on Saturday, January 21, asked well-wishers to support her son who performed who excelled in the national test.

Anthony Omondi Wambui who scored a mean grade of A- of 75 points in the KCSE 2022 resorted to menial jobs to raise money for his university admission. 

"I'm pleading with anyone who can help to assist my son get admission in the university since I no longer work as I used to do," Omondi's mother asked for help. 

Omondi who attended Langalanga Secondary School in Nakuru County, is hoping to pursue Aeronautical Engineering at a university that offers the coveted programme.

"I hope to join university so that I may uplift my family. I also believe that one day I will be in a position to help other needy persons," Omondi assured. 

According to his mother, Omondi went directly to menial jua kali work immediately after writing his last paper at Langalanga Secondary School. 

"I believe when given a chance, I will do well in my course and change the life of many people in the society," Omondi assured potential well-wishers. 

At his Jua kali garage in Nakuru City, the 19-year-old is paid around Kshs500 on a daily basis, to which he gives his mother Ksh400 to buy food. 

Omondi is currently the sole breadwinner of his family since his mother Pauline Wambui stopped working sometime back. 

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Friday, January 20, announced that a total of 173,345 students who sat the 2022 KCSE exam qualified for university placement.

“The number of candidates with minimum university entry qualification of Grade C+ and above has risen to 173,345 (19.03%) in the year 2022 KCSE Examination compared to 145,776 (17.55%) in 2021,” Machogu explained. 

The Cabinet Secretary also noted that 1,146 (0.13%) candidates obtained an overall Grade A in the 2022 KCSE Examination compared with 1,138 (0.14%) candidates in 2021.

University admission fees remains to be a challenge to many students, especially, those that come from poor family like Omondi. 

On Saturday, January 21, the United States of American government asked qualified KCSE 2022 candidates to apply for scholarship opportunities. 

Through the US Embassy in Nairobi, Americans called on the top Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education 2022 candidates who scored A- above to apply for the Education USA Scholars Program. 

"Congratulations to all KCSE candidates on your results! If you are a top student wanting to take your higher learning studies to the United States, apply for the 2023 Education USA Scholars Program," US Embassy in Nairobi explained.
